Many people use the same products and same extraction approach for both blackheads and whiteheads — and wonder why results aren't as expected. In reality these two types have different formation mechanisms and need different approaches.

Blackhead (mụn đầu đen) — tại sao có màu đen?Blackheads — why are they black?

Blackhead là open comedone — lỗ chân lông mở, bã nhờn và tế bào chết tích tụ bên trong nhưng không có màng da phủ lên. Khi tiếp xúc với không khí, melanin trong bã nhờn bị oxy hóa và chuyển sang màu đen — không phải do bụi bẩn, mà là phản ứng oxy hóa bình thường.

Blackheads are open comedones — the pore is open, with sebum and dead cells accumulated inside but no skin film covering them. When exposed to air, melanin in the sebum oxidises and turns black — not because of dirt, but a normal oxidation reaction.

Whitehead (mụn đầu trắng) — khác gì blackhead?Whiteheads — how do they differ from blackheads?

Whitehead là closed comedone nhẹ — lỗ chân lông bị một màng da mỏng phủ lên, nên bã nhờn bên trong không tiếp xúc với không khí và không bị oxy hóa → màu trắng hoặc vàng nhạt. Nhô lên bề mặt da hơn blackhead và thường dễ nặn hơn vì có lối thoát.

Whiteheads are a mild form of closed comedone — the pore is covered by a thin skin film, so the sebum inside doesn't contact air and doesn't oxidise → white or pale yellow colour. They protrude more than blackheads and are generally easier to extract because they have an exit point.

Với blackhead:For blackheads:

BHA (salicylic acid) là lựa chọn tốt nhất — tan trong dầu, thẩm thấu vào lỗ chân lông mở và hòa tan bã nhờn. Dùng 2–3 lần/tuần. Peel định kỳ giúp ngăn blackhead tái tạo. Tránh dùng pore strips — chỉ lấy phần trên, rễ mụn vẫn còn và blackhead mọc lại sau 3–5 ngày.

BHA (salicylic acid) is the best choice — oil-soluble, penetrates open pores and dissolves the sebum plug. Use 2–3 times per week. Regular peels help prevent blackhead reformation. Avoid pore strips — they only remove the top portion, the root remains and blackheads return within 3–5 days.

Với whitehead:For whiteheads:

Retinoid + nhẹ tay với BHA. Vì có lối thoát tự nhiên, whitehead chín muồi có thể được nặn đúng kỹ thuật tại spa. Không nặn tại nhà — mặc dù nhìn dễ hơn blackhead, lực sai vẫn có thể đẩy nội dung vào trong gây viêm.

Retinoids + gentle BHA. Since they have a natural exit point, fully matured whiteheads can be extracted with correct technique at a spa. Don't self-extract at home — although they appear easier than blackheads, incorrect force can still push contents inward causing inflammation.
