Chemical peels at home — should you DIY?
At-home peel products are increasingly popular but their risks are commonly underestimated.
At-home peel kits with AHA 30%, BHA 20%, even TCA — are widely available on e-commerce platforms. And every week Hana sees at least one client with skin damage from incorrect self-peeling. This article doesn't dismiss at-home peels — it helps you understand the real risks.
When is at-home peeling potentially acceptable?
At-home peels at low concentrations — AHA below 10%, BHA below 2%, pH above 3.5 — are essentially "chemical exfoliation" rather than true peels. Risk is low if: skin isn't sensitive, you're not using retinoids, there are no open wounds, and you avoid sun exposure immediately after.
✦ Có thể peel tại nhà nếu
✦ At-home peels are potentially acceptable if
AHA ≤ 10%, BHA ≤ 2%, pH ≥ 3.5
AHA ≤ 10%, BHA ≤ 2%, pH ≥ 3.5
Skin is not sensitive or acutely inflamed
Không đang dùng retinol, isotretinoin hoặc acid kê đơn
Not currently using retinol, isotretinoin, or prescription acids
Patch tested on a small area at least 24 hours beforehand
When should you absolutely not peel at home?
High concentration (AHA > 20%, any TCA concentration) — skin tissue can be destroyed without precise timing and correct neutralisation
Da đang bị sunburn, viêm cấp hoặc có vết thương hở — peel lên da đang tổn thương có thể gây bỏng hóa chất nghiêm trọng
Sunburned, acutely inflamed or broken skin — peeling on damaged skin can cause severe chemical burns
Currently using prescription retinoids — this combination can cause severe irritation and damage that is slow to heal
Pregnant or breastfeeding — many acids haven't been adequately studied for safety during pregnancy
Darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) — much higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation with at-home acid peels
Leaving it on longer than directed — "A few more minutes for better results" is dangerous thinking. Each additional minute at high concentrations can cause serious, slow-to-heal damage.
Incorrect neutralisation — many acid peels (such as glycolic acid) need proper neutralisation — for example with a sodium bicarbonate solution — before washing off. Rinsing with water alone may not be enough to stop the chemical reaction.
"I'm not saying all at-home peels are bad — I'm saying high-concentration at-home peels are dangerous. When I see clients with chemical burns from self-peeling, what I feel most is that they only wanted to save money, not knowing the real cost was far higher."
