Why shouldn't you squeeze spots at home? The short answer: with your fingers the pressure comes from both sides, is hard to control and usually lands on the very spot that isn't ready. The plug is easily pushed deeper, the follicle wall can rupture and inflammation spreads, so the spot gets bigger, takes longer to heal and is more likely to leave a dark mark or a scar. The safer route: leave it alone, keep your routine gentle, let a therapist extract the spots that are ready, and see a dermatologist for deep, painful lumps.

Almost everyone with acne has given in to a whitehead in front of the mirror at some point. This article explains what actually happens under the skin, so next time you have a clear reason to pull your hand back. Blackheads and pore strips are covered in detail in Nose blackheads.

Dưới daUnder the skin

Điều gì xảy ra khi bạn tự nặn mụn tại nhà?What happens when you squeeze spots at home?

A spot starts with a clogged follicle: oil and dead skin cells form a plug, bacteria can multiply inside and the skin responds with inflammation. A follicle is like a small tube running at an angle into the skin, so when you press two fingers in from either side, the force pushes the plug not only up but also down and sideways.

The plug goes deeper and the follicle wall can rupture

If the spot has no clear head or the plug sits deep, most of the force goes downwards. The follicle wall can tear, letting oil and bacteria spill into deeper skin, and the small spot becomes bigger, redder and more painful, sometimes for a week. That is why a spot so often gets "bigger" after squeezing.

2. Viêm lan rộng và nhiễm trùng2. Spreading inflammation and infection

Hands and nails carry bacteria even right after washing. Hard squeezing easily leaves scratches or open wounds that let bacteria in, and squeezing the same place repeatedly can turn one spot into a cluster. A spot that feels hot, hurts more, oozes pus or has spreading redness is a sign to see a doctor.

3. Thâm sau viêm kéo dài nhiều tháng3. Dark marks that last for months

The stronger the inflammation, the more likely the skin is to produce extra pigment at that spot. In medium to darker skin tones, including most Vietnamese skin, these post-inflammatory marks appear more easily and can take months to fade. If you already have marks, Can acne marks fade? explains the options.

4. Sẹo lõm4. Pitted scars

When the damage goes deep, the skin can heal unevenly and leave a pitted scar. Unlike a dark mark, a pitted scar doesn't fade on its own and is much harder to improve. Squeezing deep spots, squeezing repeatedly and picking scabs all raise this risk.

5. Vỡ mao mạch, đỏ dai dẳng5. Broken capillaries and lingering redness

Ở vùng da mỏng như cánh mũi và hai bên má, ấn mạnh nhiều lần có thể làm vỡ mạch máu nhỏ, để lại chấm đỏ hoặc vùng đỏ kéo dài.

On thin skin such as the sides of the nose and the cheeks, pressing hard again and again can break tiny blood vessels, leaving red dots or lingering redness.

6. Thói quen cạy khó bỏ6. A picking habit that is hard to break

Squeezing one spot often leads to a second, then to picking scabs while the skin heals. If you find you can't stop, picking until the skin is scratched or bleeding even though you know it does harm, talk to a doctor: this is a real condition and there is specific help for it.

Around the nose and upper lip: take extra care

The area from the bridge of the nose down to the corners of the mouth is sometimes called the "danger triangle", because its veins connect with deeper veins inside the head. Serious infection spreading from a spot is very rare and there is no need to panic, but it is one more reason not to squeeze hard here. If a spot in this area becomes very swollen and painful and you have a fever, see a doctor straight away.

Nặn mụn chuyên nghiệp khác tự nặn ở điểm nào?How is professional extraction different?

The difference lies in what happens before, during and after the extraction. At Harmonie, each session follows four steps (details on the acne extraction in Tân Định page):

Assessing each spot: spots that are ready, with the plug near the surface, are extracted; spots still swelling, with no head or too deep, are left alone. At home people tend to go straight for the reddest, most painful one.
Softening the pores with steam or a softening product, so plugs come out more easily with less force.
  3. Lấy nhân: dụng cụ tiệt trùng hoặc dùng mới cho từng khách, ấn đúng hướng nang lông, lực vừa đủ, và dừng khi nhân không ra thay vì cố ép.Extracting: tools sterilised or brand new for each client, pressure in line with the follicle and no harder than needed, and knowing when to stop instead of forcing a plug that will not come out.
Calming the skin and explaining aftercare; a day-by-day plan is in How should you care for your skin after an extraction?

Each session is 1 hour 30 minutes in a private room, one client with one therapist. In the price list: Basic acne care 220,000đ for blackheads, whiteheads and tiny comedones; Deep acne care 350,000đ for ripe closed comedones; Acne skin recovery 400,000đ for red, irritated acne-prone skin.

Không nên nặnHands off

Những nốt không ai nên nặn, kể cả ở spaSpots nobody should squeeze, not even at a spa

For cystic, pustular or severely inflamed acne, Harmonie does not extract; please see a dermatologist first. If you are on prescription acne treatment such as isotretinoin or a topical retinoid, let Harmonie know before booking, because your skin is usually more sensitive and fragile during that time.

Ở nhàAt home

Không nặn thì ở nhà nên làm gì?If not squeezing, what should you do at home?

Giữ tay xa khỏi mặtKeep your hands away from your face

Keep your nails short, notice when you tend to touch your face (while working, while scrolling), and avoid magnifying mirrors under bright light. Many mild spots go down on their own within a few days to a couple of weeks if left alone.

Miếng dán mụn cho nốt đã có đầuHydrocolloid patches for spots that have come to a head

Hydrocolloid patches suit spots that have a white head or have already opened: they absorb some fluid and shield the spot from your fingers. For deep spots with no head, blackheads or closed comedones, they usually do not help much. Apply to clean, dry skin and replace once the patch turns cloudy white.

Routine dịu nhẹ, thêm hoạt chất thận trọngA gentle routine, with actives added carefully

The foundation is a gentle cleanser, a non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen. Common actives for acne-prone skin include BHA (salicylic acid), benzoyl peroxide and topical retinoids; they can cause dryness, flaking or irritation at first, so start slowly, add one product at a time and stop if your skin burns or turns red. If you are pregnant or planning to be, ask a doctor before using retinoids.

Tần suấtHow often

Bao lâu nên đi nặn mụn chuyên nghiệp?How often does professional extraction make sense?

Oily, acne-prone skin usually needs a gap of 3–4 weeks; combination skin about 4–6 weeks; dry or sensitive skin about 6–8 weeks (the reasons are in How often should you get acne extractions?). New spots between sessions can wait for the therapist at your next visit. If your acne has not improved, or has got worse, after a few months of consistent care, see a dermatologist.

FAQFAQ

Cleaner, but not safe. The main problems are the pressure from both sides, the wrong angle and choosing a spot that is not ready. Those can still push the plug deeper, rupture the follicle wall and leave a mark or a scar.

Stop and leave it. Rinse gently, pat dry and put on a hydrocolloid patch if the spot is open. Do not cover it with makeup, do not pick the scab and wear sunscreen. If the spot feels hot, hurts more, has pus or the redness spreads, see a doctor.

Better not. A tool only works when it is properly sterilised and used on softened skin, on the right spot, at the right angle and with the right pressure. Without experience it is easy to press too hard, slip and scratch the skin, with results no better than squeezing with your fingers.

No. Cysts and nodules sit deep and are hard, swollen and painful; squeezing them anywhere easily spreads inflammation and leaves scars. See a dermatologist; Harmonie does not extract these.
